Denmark

22nd – 27th May 2025.

We made a slightly unusual approach from Germany to Denmark by ferry. Soon it will be much easier, as work has started on a tunnel, opening 2029.

First stop was Nakskov, a seaside resort with sheltered boating and fishing areas. Easy trails around reedbeds. Top bird here was a singing Icterine Warbler, one that neither of us had seen before. It was a very melodious little bird, happy to pose for us while we checked out its yellowish plumage. Unfortunately no pictures.

We met up with our Iain in Svendborg and had a trip to Valdemar’s Slott (castle), a place where the public road dives straight through an archway into a flag lined courtyard. Great birding walk in the woods here, too.

A sunny walk with Iain and his Katrine from her teacher training college at Ollerup to the nearby woods and a visit to the excellent weaving museum at Tommerup.

On Monday a helpful motor electrician in Assens fixed a fault with the van that has been plaguing us since before we set out. We had to wait for a new fuse to arrive from Odense, so enjoyed a walk round Assens while we waited.

We planned to travel by ferry from Northern Jutland, so had quite a long drive. Visited an amazing place we knew almost at the northern tip. Råberg Mile, the only mobile dune in Europe, and a very rich nature reserve.

Next day we were on the big ferry to Norway.
