In Bøverdalen near Lom

Norway South 29th July – 1st August

We crossed from the wild fjord country over the high ground of Sognefjell, the great valley systems of Mjøsa and Glomma and left Norway by a small road into Sweden again.

Main destinations

Billingen Steinbru

Lom

Sognefjell

Hurrungane
Elverum

From Geiranger we drove east over stony mountains and down the long valley of Billingsdalen. We broke the journey at Billingen, a mountain resort with restaurant and trails into the edge of the Reinheimen Nasjonalpark. The trails led us up to the Steinbru, a bridge formed where a large rock has landed in the gorge. We also enjoyed the Seterpensjonat, the small resort with friendly staff, welcome coffee and waffles.

In Lom (also known as Fossbergom) we enjoyed visits to the National Mountain Centre and to the Bordvassvegen in Bøverdalen.

Bordvassvegen is one of those monuments to incredible perseverence by individuals to get a job done. One man and his son dug the 11km conduit on contract to 7 farmers in the dale. It took them years. Now a trail follows the first 4.5km, giving great views over the dale and lots of interesting bird life, including green and white-backed woodpecker and goshawk.

We crossed the high fells one more time, with an overnight in Leirdalen and the high roads over Sognefjellet and then the Hurrungane mountains.

That evening we made a long journeyeast to Elverum, arriving just after two days’ rain had finished. We stopped at a campsite beside the same Glomma river we had been beside in Tynset, over 200km away.

The main attraction here was the excellent National Forest Museum. With the regional museum of buildings connected over the river by a bridge, they made an excellent visit. We stayed till after closing time and then quickly searched the large outside area for the van keys, which fortunately we found.

That was our last visit in Norway in 2025, and one of the best interpretive centres we saw. Now we moved on to Sweden on our way South.
